September 12th through 18th marked National Assisted Living Week. Does Hallmark make a card for that? I doubt it but it does give us a moment to pause and think about it.
First, what is Assisted Living? It’s a home or community that provides 24-hour supervision and additional daily support with things like dressing, showering, toileting and medication management along with all that is provided in Independent Living such as housekeeping, meals, transportation, and activities. Some people move for the added support and socialization, others because it may be a less expensive option for their care. No matter the reason, a move from what has been “home” for years and even decades can cause feelings of fear, worry, distress as well as excitement and anticipation.
Here are some things to consider if you are wondering if a move is ‘right’ for you:
I really like being in my home and I don’t really want to leave my home, but…
- The best thing about living here is…
- What I like least about this home is…
- The people I can call to help me in an emergency who live nearby are…
- I feel safe in my home except for…
- I feel comfortable in my home except for…
- My biggest concern for a move is…
- If I move, I will be giving up…
- If I move from my home, I will miss most…
- Advantages to a move closer to my child are…
Any decision made requires an ‘action plan’. There will be trade offs and compromises made. Things will be ‘given up’ yet other things will be ‘gained’. Any decision made is not etched in stone, meaning it can be revisited, revised, and perhaps even changed.
Asking or having help does not take away your independence, it allows you to continue to be as independent as possible and to take charge of your life. Thinking the opposite will cause you to lose your independence. Talk to family and loved ones who have your best interest in mind what their thoughts are about moving into a senior community, or perhaps even Assisted Living if needed.
