On Saturday, October 12th, our law firm team will be walking in the 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer's. Following is the story of why our geriatric care manager, Dedra Jize, is walking. I have been working with families who have been afflicted with Alzheimer’s for almost 10 years. I have seen the emotional stress and the financial strain it puts on families, especially for spouses. When families get the support they need, the journey becomes more reasonable, especially for those who desire … [Read more...] about Litherland, Kennedy & Associates – Why We Walk to Help End Alzheimer’s
The Job of a Caregiver
by Dedra Jize, OT, CSA Geriatric Care Manager, Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law The Caregiver job is one of the least understood jobs by other family members and friends who are watching from the outside, regardless if they live near or far. As the Caregiver, you may be pushed to the limit but there is no time to explore options for help. Perhaps there are funds out there to tap into to reduce the financial strain or maybe your loved one is eligible for … [Read more...] about The Job of a Caregiver
A Thank You to All Caregivers
by Dedra Jize, OT, CSA Geriatric Care Manager, Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law November is National Family Caregivers Month. It is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. A special “thank you’ to all you Caregivers. It is something not said often enough, and the words feel insufficient for all that you do to care for someone and for all that you have given up to allow you to be a Caregiver. A “thank you’ feels inadequate to express … [Read more...] about A Thank You to All Caregivers

Kennedy, Attorney at Law Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law Recently I have worked with many clients who have expressed concerns about when California will implement the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA). The DRA was signed into Federal law on February 8, 2006. The Federal government then told the individual states to update their Medi-Cal laws to conform with the DRA. Currently California has not yet implemented the changes that would bring Medi-Cal … [Read more...] about Elder Law Today: Medi-Cal and the Deficit Reduction Act

by Dedra Jize, OT, CSA Geriatric Care Manager, Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law “Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take you.” These lyrics to a popular song by the Beach Boys in the late 1980’s made us want to go and bask in the sun. Or maybe you’re a little bit country and Willie Nelson’s song, “On the Road Again” strikes a chord with you. Consider Taking the Entire Family on Vacation
by Dedra Jize, OT, CSA Geriatric Care Manager, Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law With summer approaching, you may be thinking of planning a summer vacation. There has been a shift to making these trips intergenerational; the grandchildren, parents and grandparents all go together. Caregiver Burnout
Caregiver Burnout by Dedra Jize, OT, CSA Geriatric Care Manager, Litherland, Kennedy & Associates, APC, Attorneys at Law In California, there are over 4 million ‘informal’ caregivers that provide care for their parents or friends. It may be that the older adult wants to remain in their own home and needs occasional assistance, or the caregiving is long distance which can be logistically and emotionally difficult. Perhaps … [Read more...] about Caregiver Burnout
What is Division of Assets? (An Elder Law Today Blog)
Division of Assets is the name commonly used for the Spousal Impoverishment provisions of the Medicare Catastrophic Act of 1988. It applies only to married couples. The intent of the law was to change the eligibility requirements for Medi-Cal in situations where one spouse needs nursing home care while the other spouse remains in the community (i.e. at home or in an assisted living facility). The law, in effect, recognizes that it makes little sense to impoverish both spouses when only one needs … [Read more...] about What is Division of Assets? (An Elder Law Today Blog)
